Over Ten Years Bootie SF Has Grown From Small Monthly Party Into The "Mecca Of The Mashup World"

Posted by Billyjam, August 17, 2013 04:50pm | Post a Comment

A lot has changed since San Francisco based promoters/DJs/remixers Adrian and Mysterious D (aka A Plus D) began their mashup party Bootie SF a decade ago as an intimate low-key monthly midweek gathering at the (now closed SoMa disctrict bike messenger-turned-lesbian bar) Cherry Bar in SF - a place for friends and fellow fans (plus those curious) of the then burgeoning mashup scene/culture to get together and dance to the latest mashups (melds of two or more songs together - often from disparate genres - and born out of the hip-hop production style of sampling and mixing). For starters most people didn't know what a "mashup" was. Another thing different back then was that people still bought a lot more CDs than they do nowadays (it was more troublesome to download mp3 files then too) - and hence were most appreciative of the free mashup mix CDs that  A Plus D generously handed out at every party back then, and still do to this day.

Another major difference between now and then was that back in 2003 and for two more years there was no YouTube - a place synonymous with remixers, from young aspiring bedroom producers to established major club DJs, showcasing their latest mashup productions. "You've got a whole new generation of kids coming up who aren't even aware that there was a time when "mashing up" songs or videos was looked at as something unique or weird. It's simply another way to consume music, and a way to put your own stamp on pop culture," A Plus D told the Amoeblog this week taking a break in their busy week from prepping for tonight's (August 17th, 2013) big 10 year anniversary show at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco, coordinating with the numerous Bootie satellite clubs in cities all around the world, updating their heavily trafficked website, plus getting ready for Bootie's upcoming annual trip out to Burning Man (it was at Burning Man in 2004 where the inseparable pair got married).

DJ Earworm Mashup - United State of Pop 2012 (Shine Brighter)

Mashup master DJ/producer DJ Earworm's annual “United State of Pop” mashup mixes of the year's 25 biggest Billboard Hot 100 pop hits have become an anticipated event at the end of each year since the San Francisco based DJ began doing them five years ago. Earworm's brand new United States of Pop 2012 (Shine Brighter) mix, which was premiered last Saturday night at 11:30pm atBootie SF at their weekly party at the DNA Lounge in San Francsico (tonight's thier Post Apocalypse Bootie party), finally got uploaded for fans to hear on Tuesday (Dec 18th) on both SoundCloud and on YouTube. DJ Earworm, born Jordan Roseman, does the great video mixes too, and in the four days since he posted the new mix has gotten close to million and a half YouTube views. Subtitled Shine Brighter the United States of Pop 2012 is an exercise in how to seamlessly inter-weave all of these disparate 25 tracks and make them sound like one perfectly cohesive track. Peep the video above and see how of the songs/artists you can name. Below is a complete list of them all and yes it includes "Gangnam Style." Follow DJ Earworm on Facebook and Twitter, and mashups on Bootie's website.

"The Monster Show" Headlines at "San Fransexual" Club Bootie SF's Pre-Pride Extravaganza Tonight at the DNA Lounge

Posted by Billyjam, June 16, 2012 02:24pm | Post a Comment
In celebration of this year's LGBT Pride Month and as a warm-up to next weekend's mega SF Pride Parade & festival celebrations the ever-active bookers at Bootie SF are presenting The Monster Show tonight at their DNA Lounge weekly party. "We are totally ready to get our gay on as Pride nears, and it doesn't get much gayer than The Monster Show," said the promoters of the popular, long-running weekly mashup party earlier this week.

At tonight's Bootie SF Pre Pride Party, in addition to the 11pm mashup drag extravaganza on the DNA main stage, Cookie Dough and the rest of the fun folks (who know how to party) from The Monster Show will also take over the upstairs area of the DNA when they will transform it into the Monster Electro-House Room. Described by the folks at Bootie as "unlike other drag shows, with breaks between the numbers, this is just one non-stop, mega-mixed show with a whole series of drag queens lip-syncing. You can watch the show and dance at the same time" The Monster Show at Bootie tonight should be hella fun.

Yesterday I reached out to The Monster Show's Cookie Dough to ask what to expect tonight at Bootie SF and for more insights into The Monster Show and its San Francisco history. "The Monster Show started in the Summer of 2004 at Harvey's in the heart of The Castro. At the time there were no other drag shows residing in The Castro, so we filled a much needed void of drag in The Pulse Of Gay Mecca," Cookie Dough told me. "What we have become known for are our non-stop continuous mixed shows; a sort of an assault-to-the-senses, created by co-founder and my DJ husband DJ MC2." Tonight DJ MC2 will be getting busy in the upstairs area of the DNA drawing from his three decades of turntable mixing history that Cookie Dough promised will be "a beat matched mix of house beats with some of todays hottest artists and remixers, along with a light show of lasers, fog, and dance lights moving with the energy of the room." Monster Party friend DJ Guy Ruben will also be spinning upstairs (set time 10:45pm to midnight). Meanwhile downstairs on the main stage from 11pm to 11:30pm, Cookie Dough said "We will give the Monster Bootie fans our 7th Annual Pride Show with Bootie; an in-your-face mash up of electrifying drag queens from all around San Francisco."

Mash Up Of The Week: Thin Lizzy vs The Pixies + Bootie SF Club Tonight

Posted by Billyjam, June 11, 2011 09:30am | Post a Comment

This latest mashup has actually been around for a few months now but I just caught up with it this week thanks to the good folks at the San Francisco found global mash up club Bootie who posted it on their website. I think that the above melding of Thin Lizzy and The Pixies by Phil RetroSpector is just pure brilliance since it so effortlessly melds two songs into one - it's like they were always meant to be heard this way as "The Boys Are Back in Heaven." So popular is the Bootie SF party that it happens every Saturday night at the DnA Lounge on 11th Street in San Francisco. Most parties tend to be monthlies. Only a rare club night can sustain weekly parties. So to have one every Saturday and a major metropolitan club speaks highly of the brand that Bootie SF's hard-working promoters / DJs / producers Adrian and Mysterious D (aka A plus D) have built up over the years. In fact they've taken the Bootie party all over the country and the world.

At Bootie SF, which has become the world's biggest mashup party, happens every Saturday at the DNA Lounge on 11th Street in San Francisco. Tonight the line up is creators/residents A plus D throwing down all the latest and best mashup jams plus Smash-Up Derby, the live mashup rock band, do a set at 11pm. Additionally tonight will be a performance from Girl Tack ("the world's first Girl Talk tribute act) doing, Night Ripper in it's entirety. There will also be electro-pop duo out of LA/Brooklyn Purple Crush doing a 2 song live show at midnight and DJing electro, indie and pop remixes upstairs.  Check out the Bootie website for updates on all their parties including NYC and be sure to check out the latest June Bootie Top 10. mashups.

Mash-Up Of The Week: Elvis Fantasay 2001 + Voicedude Mash Up Series

Posted by Billyjam, November 11, 2010 03:42pm | Post a Comment
Elvis The King and The Queen of Pop Lady GaGa: "Let Me Just Dance"

The guys who make up Elvis Fantasay 2001 + Voicedude specialize in making audio & video mash ups of Elvis Presley's music mixed with either a variety of contemporary pop acts or alternately remixing / mashing up Elvis with himself. They keep churning out new mash ups at a most impressive rate, and then posting them up on YouTube with mp3 download links embedded usually. Their very latest is Elvis Fantasay + Voicedude: "Suspicious Minds Mash Up Blu Ray" and others also created in the past two weeks include their HD live remix of Elvis Fantasay + Travis Ledoyt "I'm In Love (All Shook Up)" (below) and, from a couple of months ago, their mash up of The King with Lady GaGa (above).
