New Techno/Electro 12"s Coming This Weekend:

Italoboyz
TECHNO TOWER 12"
MSHIP022

These guys fuse organic and electric sounds and make them collide with elements of jazz and folk. "TECHNO TOWER" and "CHINESE" are a testament to these roots and will turn some heads on the dancefloor. This isn't your average tech house or techno.

Roland Appel
COLD BLOODED REMIX 12"
AUS0923

Deep techno starts the record with "COLD BLOODED." HORSE MEAT DISCO fav "SNOW IN THE SPRINGTIME" gets a full single release, old school disco in every way. DFA darlings RUNAWAY turn it in a slow burning house direction that builds the tension.

"Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival - April 17-19th, 2009 or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Find 30 Reasons To Love a Weekend in the Desert."

- By Scott Butterworth

Day #8 - Artist #8 - Band of Horses:
Band of Horses
Sub Pop, the Seattle record label that threw kindling on the spark of Grunge music with early signings of Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney in the late 1980s, deserves their own stage at this year's Coachella festival. With appearances from four of their artists, Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, Blitzen Trapper, and No Age, toting some of the "buzzworthy-ist" albums of the past year, Sub Pop is still staying relevant in the indie rock world with 20+ years under their belt.

Among those in the Sub Pop fraternity, Band of Horses has the largest font size on this year's Coachella lineup. The Seattle-based band were first discovered and signed by Sub Pop while opening for future label-mate Iron & Wine during local area shows. Band of Horses released their debut album Everything All The Time in 2006 and grabbed attention with the standout track "The Funeral." They followed that up quickly with Cease to Begin in 2007. Again the band gained critical attention from songs "Is There a Ghost" and "No One's Gonna Love You," finding its way to many yeBand of Horsesar-end "Best of 2007" lists. This is the kind of band you can gain "indie-cred" from by introducing to your guy friends, and get just as many "sensitive-guy points" for putting it on a mixtape to impress that certain girl.

MY FUNNY VALENTINE

chuck mangione my funny valentine
Long a jazz standard, the beautiful song "My Funny Valentine," which originally was unveiled to the world as a show tune in the 1937 Broadway musical Babes In Arms by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, has remained a most popular song for musicians, especially vocalists, to cover ever since-- the song has reportedly appeared on over 1300 albums to date, and still counting.

Artists who have covered the song over the years include Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Costello, Nico, Rufus Wainwright, Sarah Vaughan, Chuck Mangione, Chaka Khan, Stan Getz, Dolly Parton, Chet Baker (who scored the first major hit with the song), Miles Davis (who in 1964 released the live album My Funny Valentine recorded at a concert at Lincoln Center, NYC), Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Sammy Davis, Jr., Van Morrisomy funny valentinen (off his 1994 LP A Night In San Francisco), Carly Simon, and Etta James (Kanye West sampled her version on the song "Addiction" on his album Late Registration).

Although the song was first performed in 1937 in Babes In Arms on Broadway, where it ran for an impressive 289 performances, it wouldn't be recorded for another 8 years when the first record release of the song by Hal McIntyre with vocals by Ruth Gaylor briefly charted in 1945.

(In which Job zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I’m writing this blog in a race against time.

I just popped two Tylenol PM caplets a couple of minutes ago. I expect my ability to compose grammar will degrade rapidly… starting now.

The problem is that I have too much to tell you. I almost tripped over Lily Tomlin’s feet at the HBO after-party the night of the Emmy’s. (I’ve been told that these so-called “Emmy’s” are an award they give to people in the television business, but I wanna do some fact-checking on that before I present the data as true.) I also caught Glenn Close bopping her shoulders when the band began playing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”.

Why do you Earthlings go so ga-ga over that song?!

Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world.

The boyfriend snagged us a chauffeured Audi. This fuggin' car had red, lit-up buttons on everything. Like, even the buttons had mini-buttons on them. I was intimidated. I don't like to think the car I'm riding in is smarter than me.

At a certain point we ended up in Anna Paquin's limo and headed over to the TV Guide party, just in time to miss Kanye West. I sent Kanye a box of Violet Crumbles to make up for it. It's his favorite candy bar. For Thanksgiving last year, he assembled the entire meal - turkey, stuffing, yams, Waldorf salad - using ONLY Violet Crumbles. It was an innovative and delicious meal and everyone who attended enjoyed themselves until we suffered diabetic shock and passed out drooling stomach bile.

Okay, some of that last paragraph is untrue.

Melissa Logan’s birthday party was two nights ago. I was there after a few rounds at The Advocate’s 40th anniversary party. William Baldwin was there, and I wasn’t sure if his standing across the room and paying no attention to me whatsoever was his idea of a come-on, but what else could it have been? The poor man just can’t come to grips with the fact that I am happily committed to Corey.

Kanye Plugs Amoeba, Murakami on Kimmel Show....

We certainly don't mind little plugs like this. Check him out at the 1:55 mark.

This clip also educated me to the fact that Takashi Murakami created the artwork for Kanye's new release. If  you're a fan (and / or collector 8) of Murakami, make sure to catch his show at the MOCA.  Word has it that  Kanye is the guest of honor at the ultra VIP night.....  Looks like I'll miss that and have to make the "public" opening. Works for me....
