Hip-Hop Rap-Up: #1 DJ Lazyboy, Fashawn & Nas, Cannibal Ox, Fundrboogie/Mr. Complex, Tuxedo's Jake One & Mayer Hawthorne + more

New releases to arrive at Amoeba this week include the technically soul - but with a hip-hop flavor - brand new album from prolific and diverse Seattle hip-hop producer Jake One along with blue-eyed soul singer Mayer Hawthorne entitled Tuxedo via Stones Throw Records. Tuxedo is also the band name of these two collaborating talents' alter egos who, as Aquarius (Mayer Hawthorne) and Taurus (Jake One) are dressed up in tuxedos - looking somewhat reminiscent of Dan the Automator and Prince Paul as the Handsome Boy Modeling School – and presented by the label headed by Peanut Butter Wolf (a man known to dress up himself) as descendants of the one- word moniker family of funk, where you will find groups such as Chic, Shalamar, Plush, and Zapp. For a better idea of Tuxedo's infectious retro dance grooves peep their video for the album track "Do It" (scroll down) and pick up their album available in CD, vinyl, and digital download formats.

Hip-Hop Rap-Up: BadBadNotGood & Ghostface Killah, Big Sean, THEESatisfaction, Fashawn, Churchward Pub DJ Battle + more

Amoeba Berkeley Hip-Hop Top 5 Week ending 02:27:15

1) BadBadNotGood & Ghostface Killah Sour Soul (Lex)

2) Fashawn The Ecology (Mass Appeal) [also avail as LP and DL]

3) THEESatisfaction EarthEE (Sub Pop)

4) Big Sean Dark Sky Paradise (Def Jam) [
also a deluxe CD]

5) L'Orange After the Flowers (Mello Music)

The brand new number one hip-hop chart entry at Amoeba Music Berkeley this week (thank-you to E-Lit for providing the above top five chart) is the collaborative effort of Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah and Canadian jazz trio BadBadNotGood for their one-off, full-length, joint project Sour Soul on Lex Records - available for now in CD format only with a soon be released vinyl format to follow. While not billed as such, this new album could be considered the third part of a live collaborative trilogy by Ghostface since like his last two releases - last year's 36 Seasons and 2013's Twelve Reason To Die - Sour Soul is another production that finds the WU emcee rhyming with a live band. This time out it's BadBadNotGood who, as well as their own work as a trio, have previously collaborated with the likes of Danny Brown (who coincidentally appears here) and Earl Sweatshirt - although only on individual tracks, not a full length project as here with Ghostface Killah. The end result is a strong album whose standout tracks include "Mind Playing Tricks," "Tone's Rap," "Gunshowers (feat elZhi)," and “Ray Gun (feat. DOOM)” (see music video below).

Hiero Day 2014 Artists Preview

Posted by Billyjam, August 31, 2014 11:20pm | Post a Comment

Hiero Day 2014 -- happening Monday, September 1st in Oakland in the blocks surrounding 95 Linden Street (Linden Street Brewery) -- may only be in its third year, but this ambitious, annual, refreshingly non-mainstream, all-ages East Bay hip-hop festival has quickly become the best Bay Area hip-hop festival of the year. Hiero Day features the extended Hieroglyphics hip-hop collective along with a slew of equally talented hip-hop friends (mostly Bay and Cali hip-hop acts) performing on three different stages throughout the day.   I attended last year's Hiero Day and was so impressed with how fun and how peaceful this musically rich event was!

Hiero Day is free and all-ages with a truly indie feeling, and no nasty corporate overtones. In fact it is more like an expanded modern day continuation of the Living Legends' Unsigned & Hella Broke jams back in the day. Fittingly, Mystik Journeymen are among those on the bill at Hiero Day 2014 - a day that will attract hip-hop appreciative fans in the thousands to enjoy great music, a variety of tasty food trucks, tables selling cool hip-hop clothing, a skate contest, and (for vinyl fiends and crate diggers) the beat swap meet.

New Murs & Fashawn Video Live from Amoeba Hollywood

Murs and Fashawn

One thing is for sure, Hip Hop is not dead! Not as long as Murs and Fashawn have something to say about it. The two beloved West Coast emcees teamed up for an epic collaboration on This Generation (Duck Down Records). The album boasts excellent production from the likes of K-Salaam and Beatnik with the dynamic duo supplying many memorable moments on the mic. This is definitely a release deserving of a permanent spot in your record collection.  Murs and Fashawn This Generation

Not only did they give us a free in-store performance to celebrate the album back in September 2012, the emcees also collaborated with Rock The Vote to encourage young hip hop fans to register and vote.

The message was loud and clear as Murs flaunted a retro styled Rock The Vote t-shirt. A proper album release with a proper message...Hip Hop is not dead!

Check out Murs & Fashawn perform "Heartbreaks and Handcuffs" from their performance at Amoeba Hollywood. Keep an eye out for DJ Quik in the audience! Visit for the full performance and to check out some cool show photos from the show.

Once again this week thanks are in order to the ever knowledgeable E-Lit for taking time out to chop it up with the Amoeblog in the video above to do a run down on some of the new hip-hop releases arriving (and soon to arrive) into the Berkeley Amoeba store, and also for supplying the current Amoeba Top Five Hip-Hop Chart - also above. This new hip-hop chart includes the welcome return of Dead Prez and more of their politicized hip-hop on the duo's brand new (released Tuesday) album Information Age on Varese Sarabande. Scroll down below to see a video from Dead Prez ("No Way As The Way") as well as such others as an audio only from the new chart entrant Fashawn, and the brand new video from Chi-Ali x Livin Proof x Maffew Ragazino "Better Known As NYC"  that was recorded in the studio and just got published today.
