Tyler, The Creator's 2016 Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival to include ScHoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Erykah Badu, Action Bronson, Death Grips

Along with such other artist-curated music events as the Hierogplyics' annual Hiero Day, The Roots' Picnic, and Diplo's national touring Mad Decent Block Party, Tyler, The Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival proves that increasingly artists are taking further control of aspects of their careers. Once the domain of concert promoters, more and more artists have been producing or co-producing their own music festivals. MURS' sadly no longer, high-caliber indie hip-hop Paid Dues festival which, up until 2013, presented lovingly assembled hip-hop shows for the better part of a decade.

Although hard work even when these artists work in collaboration (such as Tyler the Creator whose teamed up with Goldenvoice), these artists are doing a damn good job presenting their own music festivals. Proof is evident in the line-up of artists, announced today, for the Odd Future star's 5th annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival taking place in LA in three months from now. Artists confirmed for this year's weekend long music event will include A$AP Rocky, ScHoolboy Q, Lil Wayne, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Erykah Badu, Chance the Rapper, Death Grips, Flatbush Zombies, DJ Mustard, TOKiMONSTA, Pretty Lights, Kehlani, The Internet, Domo Genesis and, of course, Tyler, The Creator himself.  Check the flyer above for some of other artists on the line-up, with more names to be announced later. Tix will go on sale Monday, August 8th, for the two-day event (Saturday/Sunday, November 12th and 13th) that will take place in Los Angeles at Exposition Park.

Natalia Lafourcade at Amoeba

Natalia Lafourcade is a Mexican pop/rock singer and songwriter from Coatepec. While growing up, she performed in a mariachi band and in an all-girl trio called Twist before going solo at age seventeen. Her self-titled debut album was released in 2002, garnering her a GRAMMY nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. Three years later, she released her followup, Casa, as Natalia y La Forquetina, which was the name of her band at the time. In 2006, she announced she would be leaving the band to perform as a solo artist once again.

Natalia LaFourcade Hasta la Raiz

Lafourcade continued to release solo albums, with her 2009 release, Hu Hu Hu, becoming a Top 10 album in Mexico and receiving nominations for Best Latin Pop Album at the GRAMMYs and Best Female Pop Vocal Album at the Latin GRAMMY Awards. Her 2015 release, Hasta La Raiz, and its single of the same name have been nominated for five awards at this year's Latin GRAMMYs. Watch her perform live on the awards show, held at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Thursday, November 19th.

Get to know Lafourcade a little deeper as she shares many of the albums that influenced her during a recent chat with our "What's In My Bag?" crew at Amoeba Hollywood. She starts with Joni Mitchell's classic Blue, the biggest musical inspiration for her current album. She also talks about Erykah Badu's seminal Mama's Gun, Edith Piaf's Je Ne Regrette Rien, and delves into the catalog of Nick Drake.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with Thundercat

Posted by Amoebite, July 2, 2013 07:50pm | Post a Comment

Thundercat

Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner is an American bassist, singer, songwriter and producer. He is the son of jazz drummer Ronald Bruner, Sr. who played with the Temptations, Diana Ross, Gary Bartz and Gladys Knight, and he's the younger brother of Grammy Award winning drummer Ronald Bruner, Jr.

Bruner's first major gig came when he joined his brother Ronald as part of the L.A.-based punk band Suicidal Tendencies. Bruner, who was only 16 years old at the time, replaced bassist Mike Trujillo, who left the band to join Metallica. Also that year, Bruner toured with Stanley Clarke in Japan. Bruner became one of L.A.'s go to session players, working with Erykah Badu, J*Davey, Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Snoop Dogg and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.

Thundercat Apocalypse
Thundercat - Apocalyse

In 2011, Bruner released his debut, Golden Age of Apocalypse (Brainfeeder), which was Executive Produced by Flying Lotus. The duo teamed up a second time to record and produce Thundercat's sophomore album, Apocalypse (Brainfeeder, 2013). Apocalypse came in the wake of the passing of Bruner's close friend and collaborator Austin Peralta, a young Brainfeeder musician who was the keyboardist/pianist on many of the songs on Golden Age of the Apocalypse. The new album delves deeper into the free jazz, modern soul/funk that Flying Lotus and Thundercat have been pioneering throughout the Los Angeles music scene, blurring the lines between pop, funk, electronica and prog rock. Thundercat is currently working on another album with Flying Lotus, as well as playing bass, singing, and writing for Wiz Khalifa, Syd (from The Internet), and Mac Miller.
