New Albums Out Today, New Ones Coming in July/August

Today saw the releases of new albums by Belle & Sebastian member Stevie Jackson, comedian Doug Benson and a 7” from Animal Collective, among others. Check out what’s out today and what’s coming down the pipe:

Stevie Jackson
Stevie Jackson – (I Can’t Get No) Stevie Jackson

(I Can’t Get No) Stevie Jackson makes a name for itself quite outside of Belle & Sebastian, coming off like the next in line of a lineage of singer-songwriters who exist on their own terms, from John Cale to Brian Eno to Elvis Costello. Far from just being twee, Jackson rocks out to a new wave beat on “Try Me,” singing “I got pills and I’m lookin’ for thrills/At the same time I want to start a family.” The distinctive, reverb-laden lead guitar he lends Belle & Sebastian is on songs like the lovely display on the Kinks-y “Richie.” And even at his most clearly indebted to Summer of Love-era rock, he creates a varied and thoroughly rewarding listen, notably on the swinging, Mamas & Papas-style “Where Do All the Good Girls Go?”

Doug Benson – Smug Life

Huge pot fan and hilarious comedian Doug Benson releases two different versions of the same jokes on Smug Life, both performed on April 20 (4/20!) at the same club. It plays like a case study in how varied performances of the same material can yield such different results — in one case, you hear a comment yelled from the audience that gets incorporated into the joke in the later performance.

Food Drive + Charity Auction for LA Food Bank at Amoeba Hollywood, Feb 27 - Mar 5

Posted by Amoebite, February 22, 2012 03:57pm | Post a Comment
LA Food Bank logoIn conjunction with our March Charity Auction, which will benefit the LA Regional Food Bank, Amoeba Hollywood is holding a food drive! Bring in non-perishable food items to Amoeba Hollywood from February 27th - March 5th and we'll give you a $2 off "Thank You" coupon for helping out.

The items needed most are rice, beans, peanut butter, canned meats, canned fruits, and canned vegetables.

The LA Regional Food Bank, whose mission is to mobilize resources to fight hunger in our community, began in 1973 in a garage in Pasadena. Today it operates out of a 96,000 square foot facility to provide food for nearly 900 sites including abused and abandoned children homes, battered women shelters, senior centers, local food pantries, soup kitchens, AIDS hospices, and more.

You can help the LA Food Bank in two ways: bring a canned food item to Amoeba Hollywood from February 27th - March 5th and join us at our Charity Auction on March 3rd.

On Saturday, March 3rd at 4pm, comedian Doug Benson will host our monthly charity auction and 100% of the auction proceeds will benefit the LA Regional Food Bank. We'll have a crazy array of items (see February's Auction Recap for an idea of the types of goodies we offer), and as always, Amoeba will match individual donations up to $1,000. With every dollar, the Food Bank is able to provide four meals. So every dollar raised at the auction will be doubled by Amoeba and will ultimately provide eight meals. That's a lot of food for hungry people!

zach condon beirutHello friends! Sorry it has been so long since I have updated you with all the big new releases that have been coming out these last couple of weeks. It has been an intense couple of weeks of new albums! Almost too much for me to handle. I just don't know what to listen to. Which albums do I devote my time to when there are so many to choose from. It is hard to believe. But September is almost over. Summer is pretty much over. The kids are back in school. And Halloween and Christmas are right around the corner. But before we get into holiday craziness, we still have some time to enjoy these amazing albums that have been coming out in August and September.

Beirut
has finally put out a new album! Zachary beirut Condon, the genius behind Beirut, has been putting out amazing albums since Gulag Orkestar in 2006. This was followed by The Flying Club Cup which ended up somewhere on my best of the year list in 2007. He released March of the Zapotec in 2009. But this new album Rip Tide is really the third official full album by Beirut. I always looks forward to anything this guy puts out. The albums always sound like there are 20 people are playing on them. It has the depth of a Arcade Fire album but not as frenetic. His albums are more laid back. Perfect summer albums. I can imagine laying out by the pool with my fancy cocktail listening to this new album. If I did that sort of thing. This is not the kind of album I listen to while driving. Although I imagine it would be nice if you were all alone on some country road driving on some beautiful windy road. It is really never too late to fall in love with Beirut. This is some beautiful stuff. Great album to fall in or out of love to. But you will most certainly fall in love with the voice of Zach Condon! Beautiful stuff.
