Bob Mould Patch the Sky

bob mould patch the sky lpBob Mould’s 13th solo album might be the fiercest thing he’s put to tape since his days fronting Husker Du. Though the guy who practically invented alt-rock never really softened with age, songs like “The End of Things” are shockingly fast and furious. Mould displays the energy of a man less than half his age on songs like the breakneck-speed “Hands Are Tied.” Though less concerned than ever with anything constituting a shiny pop song, his sense of melody is as strong as ever on catchy songs like “Hold On” and “Pray for Rain,” which sound like lost Alternative Nation hits. His returning backing band of bassist Jason Narducy (Split Single, Verbow) and drummer Jon Wurster (Superchunk, Mountain Goats) keep things excitingly full-throttle over unfussy arrangements on songs like the shoegazey “Lucifer and God” and the brutal “Losing Time.” Who needs a Husker Du reunion when Mould’s solo career is still going this strong?

SKY FERREIRA, Wednesday, February 19

sky ferreira amoeba hollywood

Sky Ferreira’s show at Amoeba Hollywood was one of those great zeitgeisty shows where we knew we were all seeing a huge new star at the height of her hype and acclaim. Ferreira was charming and cool, engaging with the tons of young fans who came out to see her and pulling out a surprise by coming back to the stage to sing her breakthrough song, “Everything Is Embarrassing.” Read my review of the show here.

DEAP VALLY, Tuesday, May 13

The duo of Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards pulled out blistering fuzz-rock guitars and caveman stomp with hair-flying abandon at this punchy performance of tunes from their debut record, Sistrionix. Troy and Edwards easily worked the crowd into a froth and left them wanting more.

Bob Mould at Amoeba Hollywood

This summer Bob Mould stopped by Amoeba Hollywood to play a short but raucous set for a packed room. The singer-songwriter's musical career began in 1979 when he formed Husker Du, a legendary punk rock band that would influence the likes of the Pixies and Nirvana. After the dissolution of Hüsker Dü in the late 1980s, Mould started working on the material that would become Workbook, his first solo outing. In 1992, he formed the alternative rock band Sugar, which would become his most commercially successful project. Four years later, Mould returned to the stage as a solo artist once more.

Bob Mould Beauty and Ruin

In June 2014, Merge Records released his eleventh studio album, Beauty & Ruin, which led to appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, WTF with Marc Maron, and NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts. Mould performed to a packed house at Amoeba Hollywood on release day, tearing through songs at a fast and furious pace. You can see him live around the US, with opening band Cymbals and Guitars, before heading out to Europe and the UK later this fall.
