Hiero Day 2014 Artists Preview

Hiero Day 2014, happening Monday September 1st in Oakland in the blocks surrounding 95 Linden Street (Linden Street Brewery), may only be in its third year but already this ambitious annual, refreshingly non-mainstream, all ages East Bay hip-hop festival has quickly become the best Bay Area hip-hop festival of the year and with a distinct Oakland flavor. Hiero Day feature the extended Hieroglyphics hip-hop collective performing - they close out the day on the main stage - along with a slew of equally talented hip-hop friends (mostly Bay and Cali hip-hop acts) performing on the three different stages throughout the day.   I attended last year's Hiero Day and was so impressed with how fun and how peaceful this musically rich event was!

And Hiero Day is free and all ages, with a truly indie feeling and no nasty corporate overtones. In fact it is more like an expanded modern day continuation of the Living Legends' Unsigned & Hella Broke jams back in the day. Fittingly Mystik Journeymen are among those on the bill at Hiero Day 2014 - a day that will attract hip-hop appreciative fans in the thousands to enjoy great music, a variety of tasty food trucks, tables selling cool hip-hop clothing, a skate contest, and (for vinyl fiends and crate diggers) the beat swap meet. Three stages. Until 6pm. Doors open at 11am. Scroll all the way down to end to see schedule timetable for Hiero Day 2014.

Dark Time Sunshine Dark "Never Cry Wolf (feat. Reva DeVito)" (2012)

1)  Dark Time Sunshine ANX (Fake Four Inc)

The biggest mover for this week is none other than the new album from rapper Onry Ozzborn and producer Zavala, which gets my vote for best hip hop album of 2012 thus far.  The music that these two craft together is something very special, and taps into the edgiest and most provocative elements of the genre in a way that few groups can. Zavala’s beats are like transmissions from a different futuristic dimension where people still bump old school hip hop on occasion, and Onry’s deep vocals fit perfectly in the mix.  Features from Aesop Rock, P.O.S, and Busdriver amongst others. Very highly recommended!

The Chicharones "Burn It Down" (2012)

2) The Chicharones Swine Flew (Camobear)

This new album from Josh Martinez and Sleep delivers more of the fun, clever, infectious hip hop you’ve come to expect from these two. These guys have a rep for amazing live shows that landed them a headlining spot on this year’s Warped Tour, and Swine Flew is an album years in the making that balances their bouncy party songs with some serious songwriting. Great hooks, intricate verses and terrific beats from Smoke of Oldominion make this an album worth checking for.  Bacon.

Hip-Hop Rap Up 05:27:11: Tyler the Creator, Beastie Boys, Blu & Exile, RZA & WU, Mobb Deep, Skratchpad, DaVinci, Digable Planets

Amoeba Music Hollywood Weekly Hip-Hop Top Five Chart: 05:27:11

1) Blu & Exile Below The Heavens Re-Issue (Sound In Color)

2) Beastie Boys Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (Capitol)

3) Tyler the Creator Goblin (XL Recordings)

4) Blu Her Favorite Colo(u)r (Nature Sounds)

5) Neek The Exotic Still On The Hustle (Fatbeats)

Two of the top five on this week's hip-hop chart are from LA emcee / producer Blu and both new chart entries are actually reissues from the artist, who is now signed to Warner Brothers and busy working on his major label debut, due out later this year. The 30 minute remastered Her Favorite Colo(u)r, care of Brooklyn's Nature Sounds, was formerly a free mixtape, and is now being released officially for the first time. The other is a reissue of the long out of print acclaimed collaboration of Blu with Exile, Below The Heavens. This 2007 release was the artist's first full length album and was widely acclaimed by many as one of the best hip-hop albums not just of its year but of the decade. In fact, so in demand was the album that since it went out-of-print, much sought after copies sold on eBay for $100 to $200 a pop. Obviously, the new reissue is considerably cheaper, but be forewarned, it is a limited edition pressing, so get yours now before it's too late.
