Amoeba Music San Francisco Bowling Alley Rock & Bowl

Wonderful things are happening at Amoeba San Francisco, especially if you love books, collectables, amoeba San francisco bowling alleysoundtracks, vinyl, bargains of all kinds, or just like to chill out in a groovy environment. You must fall into one of those categories, right? I thought so! Then come on down and experience our newly doubled Books & Magazines section. We have more than doubled the space dedicated for music, film, and pop culture publications and are filling it with new stock daily! We now feature back issues of your favorite music and film zines, and are breaking out our backlog of used books.

You’ll also enjoy our new reading lounge, made possible by Amoeba SF’s heritage as a bowling alley! Yes, we have repurposed a few of the benches from back in the day when this building housed a bowling alley. Sit, relax, and flip through some of our fascinating used books in style.

Additionally, we’ve added a collectables case for rare and out-of-print books, toys, and other memorabilia such as lunch boxes, cookie jars, and other surprises.

In other news, all Music DVDs (except classical) have been moved from the Main Floor to the DVD Room for easy browsing. You’ll also find a greatly expanded Bargain DVD section full of amazingly priced finds. By popular demand, the Soundtrack section has been moved to the Main Floor by Spoken Word and features an expanded Soundtrack Vinyl selection. Additionally, a brand new Audiophile CD section has been added to the main floor too!

Fol Chen Play Amoeba SF Tonight, Amoeba Hollywood Tomorrow

Posted by Billy Gil, April 24, 2013 02:19pm | Post a Comment

fol chenExperimental pop group Fol Chen are as known for their innovative music as they are for their artistic activities outside of merely performing onstage. The Los Angeles-based band has given interviews with their faces obscured a la The Knife, invited guest singers onstage via Craigslist, had a metal band perform its songs, performed reconstructed, long-form versions of their albums in Russia, held a workshop in which attendees could get their own song made, and partnered with an electronics manufacturer to produce a sound device, writing and recording two songs with it.

All of that is a mouthful for a band who’s still on the up-and-up. It certainly makes for a great backstory, but it only works if the music does as well. Thankfully, Fol Chen’s music is as bright and intriguing as what they do with it, a hyperactive, dynamic electro-pop sound informed by world music, new wave, dance-punk and other sources both cerebral and celebratory. Their latest album, The False Alarms, is their most pop-oriented statement yet, with group vocals and some of their more avant-garde instincts eschewed in favor of giving singer Sinosa Loa a platform on which to perform as an alt-pop diva. I spoke with Fol Chen’s Samuel Bing before their two performances at Amoeba, first in San Francisco April 24 at 6 p.m. and then in Hollywood April 25 at 7 p.m.

Record Store Day 2013 at Amoeba SF

Posted by The Bay Area Crew, April 22, 2013 07:42pm | Post a Comment

Saturday, April 20th marked the sixth annual Record Store Day (RSD), the holiest of holy days in the record store day san francisco 2013 amoebarecord store biz. Of course, Amoeba was the hub of action in San Francisco as we are the Mecca of many a music fiend. Additionally, because the Universe works in mysterious ways, April 20th (4/20) also happens to mark the celebration of a particular herb important to many San Franciscans. Like peanut butter and jelly, the two holidays meshed together on Haight Street, creating a mystical sandwich of epic proportions.

The first Record Store Day fans on the scene lined up at 4:30am outside the doors of Amoeba San Francisco, which is pretty admirable considering the store was not scheduled to open to the public until 10:30am! Early risers were rewarded with scoring the limited edition RSD release they came for and were the firsts to get our special limited run commemorative t-shirt, which was being silk screened right on the stage by our friends at Free Gold Watch. The proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to the SF Rock Project, which is a performance-based music school for kids age 8-18!

If you missed out on the fun, watch this video below and check out these great pictures taken by our in-house photographer! It's just like being there.

Also check out our selection of limited edition Record Store Day items for sale on Amoeba.com HERE and drop by or call Amoeba to see what RSD gems are remaining.
