Aesop Rock "ZZZ Top" (2012)

Hip-Hop Top 5 Week ending 7/12/12

1) Aesop Rock Skelethon (Rhyemsayers Ent.)

2)  El-P Cancer4Cure (Fat Possum)

3) Killer Mike R.A.P. Music (Williams Street)

4) J Dilla Rebirth of Detroit (Yancey Music Group)

5) Azealia Banks 1991 EP (Interscope)

Like El-P, whose Cancer4Cure is his first album since 2007, another hip-hop artist who can patiently keep fans waiting five years before dropping a new album is Aesop Rock. And this week Aesop Rock, who used to be on El-P's currently on hiatus Def Jux label, returns triumphantly after half a decade between albums with a stellar new full-length: Skelethon on Rhymesayers Entertainment.. The album does not disappoint with powerful songs like "ZZZ Top" (video above), the opening “Leisureforce,” “Homemade Mummy,” and the lead single “Zero Dark Thirty.” With Aesop's usual barrage of intricate lyrics luckily the physical release comes with a lyrics sheet. Another new release this week is a re-release of an older hip-hop album: The Pharcyde's 1992 Bizarre Ride II: The Pharcyde [Expanded Edition] which differs from the original two-decade old classic in that it is a triple disc set with the original album in its entirety, plus two additional discs including instrumentals, remixes, and “B-cydes” plus really nice packaging that include some classic old photos of the legendary SoCal hip-hop crew and enlightening liner notes from producer J-Sw!ft.  And in honor of this most welcome reissue/extended set here is one of the great tracks from that hip-hop classic: "Passin' Me By,"

"AeroSoul 3: From Khemet 2 Aztlan" opens in SF today (2012)

This weekend is an event packed opening of a really excellent art exhibit entitled AeroSoul 3: From Khemet 2 Aztlan that will run for seven months through next February at the African American Art & Culture Complex (AAACC) in the Fillmore district of San Francisco. The exhibit marks year three for this annual Pan-African Spray Can Art Festival and, according to organizers, will "feature a body of work accentuating the African presence in art from Ancient Africa to the early African presence in the western hemisphere through the style lens of HipHop Calligraphy and iconography."

Planned for this opening weekend of the exhibit are an international artist panel, a special youth edition of the exhibit that will highlight the young and upcoming masters of the craft, and an artist lineup that will include many golden era NYC graffiti (70's/80's) figures and other street art luminaries from other parts. Among those in the house will be SKEME, Riff170, Slave TF5, Butch2,Tean TMT, Kade TMT, Chain3, Shame125, Sak MBT, and Soon1. Taking place at AAACC the opening reception is from 6pm to midnight this evening with the Youth Festival kickoff happening earlier today starting at noon and running through to 5pm. The panel discussion happens on Sunday at 6pm until 9pm. The AAACC is located at 762 Fulton Street in San Francisco. For more information go to AeroSoulArt.com and www.AAACC.org

DB Tha General x DaVinci  "Know Bout Us" (2012)

Props to the ever prolific, hard-working Matt Werner and his Thizzler On The Roof Productions organization who've just finished production on yet another great new video music video. This one - a Bay Area meets Dirty South collaboration - features studio finesse of Atlanta production crew SMKA with the mic skills of Oakland rapper DB Tha General and San Francisco's Fillmore District emcee powerhouse DaVinci. The video, which features cameos from Squadda B and Mondre M.A.N. of Main Attrakionz, was directed by Tim Jieh and is taken off the forthcoming EP Darkest Before Dawn.

This anticipated multi-artist release drops in September and will feature such Bay Area talents as Roach Gigz, iamsu!, Mistah FAB, The Jacka, Shady Blaze, Young Gully, Erk Tha Jerk, Symba, Richie Cunning, A-1, Zumbi, NhT Boyz, Willie Joe, Nio Tha Gift, Moe Green, and Cousin Fik. Essentially a best of best of the new school of Bay Area hip-hop - and no wonder since it comes from the folks instrumental in bringing the Bay Area Freshmen classes of the past few years!

Roach Gigz "Going Off G.O." (2012)

As mentioned in the previous paragraph about talented young Bay Area rappers such as Roach Gigz - above is the brand new video from the super gifted, totally unique SF mic spitter. It is for his song "Going Off" that is taken from his forthcoming official debut album (following a string of underground unofficial releases, this is actually his fifth album), Bugged Out which will drop in late August on his own imprint, Goomba Music. "I'm going to release Bugged Out for free," says Roach, "because that's how I got to where I am now: by making it as easy as possible for my diehard fans to get my music. I sell out shows; I sell out merch; I sell limited-edition physical copies – the support of my fans allows me to do this for them."
And finally I leave you with the latest video from Cut Chemist - fittingly his song "Outro" - this is the dub remix of the LA DJ/producer's new song.
