2) Phonte Charity Starts at Home (Hbd Label Group)
3) Lil Wayne Tha Carter IV (Cash Money/Universal)

5) J-Live S.P.T.A. (Triple Threat Productions)
Thanks again to E-Lit at the Amoeba Music Berkeley for the latest Top 5 Hip-Hop chart and run down of new hip-hop releases in the Telegraph Avenue Amoeba store. These include the recommended number one album of the week; Freestyle Fellowship The Promise (on Brooklyn's high caliber Decon Records, the new one from Little Brother's
Phonte Charity Starts at Home on the Hbd Label Group, Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV which will likely be charting through end of the year, and Superstar Quamallah & Deqawn's Talkin' All That Jazz on Cotter Records/Brick Records (this is a real good release that i just got through checking out). Also recommended is J-Live S.P.T.A. on Triple Threat Productions. Long one of my favorite, albeit long running underrated hip-hop talents, J-Live has been tirelessly putting it down for a decade and a half. And as his label name (Triple Threat) and new album cover and title imply he is a triple gifted artist - an MC, DJ, and producer - and he is amazing at all three - as proven on the new S.P.I.T. which stands for Said Person of That Abilility.
Other new arrivals at Amoeba highlighted by E Lit, whose well written blog is called My Back Is Bigger Than Yours, are the ever mysterious homegrown act MDR and their budget priced (only $5.98) two CD set, aptly titled Disguised, and the Mid West vocal talent Melissa Czarnik's most recent album Raspberry Jesus which, as E Lit notes, "Fans of Dessa's work or Grieves will probably dig it. It's definitly very emotive with very jazzy, low key production and some pretty strong emceeing. She's got a good voice!"
Occupy Wall Street isn't the only event going down in New York City. Also happening this week only is the big CMJ 2011 Music Marathon & Film Festival which has way too many showcases and hip-hop concerts (as well as every other type of music) to list here so best to visit the CMJ 2011 website for full details on panels and shows for this large scale event that ends tomorrow night.
In San Francisco tomorrow (Saturday October 22nd) friend of Amoeba and Bay Area turntablist pioneer DJ Quest will be doing a record release party for his new album Cosmic Parasite (featuring his fellow Bullet Proof Scratch Hamsters/Space Traveler crew mates DJ Cue and Eddie Def) which won't be released til the end of the month as both a digital release and a limited CD pressing that Amoeba will be one of the few places carrying. Tomorrow's concert by DJ Quest will be at 4oneFunktion at the Elbo Room on Valencia. More info here.
Good free show c/o Amoeba SF today with Spank Rock. Arriving on the scene with a bang a half decade ago as one of the leading ambassadors of the Baltimore Bass movement Spank Rock, who play Mezzanine tonight, will be doing a free instore performance at Amoeba San Francisco earlier in the evening when they will most likely be playing some classics such as "Rick Rubin" (off their debut Yoyoyoyoyo) along with selections off their recently released second album Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar, (you gotta love that title!) is out now on Bad Blood Records and in comparison to the debut is a teeny bit less electro and little bit more funk. Always guaranteed to deliver an almost punk rock styled high energy, full on electro charged, show Spank Rock (which is the name both the the crew and the lead attitude & style fueled MC) have been busy since they first arrived in the mid 2000's. Most recently the MC Spank Rock was both on tour (US and UK) with Mark Ronson as well as been featured, along with The View’s Kyle Falconer, on “The Bike Song” by Ronson off his album Record Collection.
The Spank Rock instore this evening begins at 6pm at Amoeba San Francisco located at 1855 Haight Street.
