Flipper "Ha Ha Ha" (1980 Live @ Flipper Berkeley Square)

In the two video clips, above and below, Flipper, one of the greatest bands of all time, play their timeless track "Ha Ha Ha," first in 1980 and then in 2009. The 1980 video clip shows the legendary and unique San Francisco punk band playing "Ha Ha Ha" along with the song "Oh Oh Ay Oh" at the long gone East Bay nightclub the Berkeley Square in July of 1980, about a year after the band had formed.

And below is a video of Flipper performing the song at a recent free in-store at Amoeba Berkeley in April 2009 with a line up that included Ted Falconi on guitar, Bruce Loose performing vocals, Steve DePace on drums, and Rachel Thoele on bass in only her second gig with the band.

The in-store coincided with the group's classic albums being reissued on vinyl. A little over a year earlier, in February 2008, Flipper also did an Amoeba in-store when they played the San Francisco Amoeba Music store. For an interview with the band from their 2008 San Francisco Amoeba instore, click here.

The song, which remains a staple at college radio to this day, was originally released on a 7" single in 1981 along with the song "Love Canal" on Subterranean Records. Interestingly, at the time feelings were mixed about the band and their atypical slowed-down punk style, but over the years Flipper have become one of those bands cited by countless musicians as having had an influence on them. The song "Ha Ha Ha" also appeared in 1981 on the excellent Alternative Tentacles compilation Let Them Eat Jellybeans. It was the second song released by the group. In 1979 Flipper marked their debut with the song "Earthworm," which appeared on the four song SF Underground 7" compilation, also on Subterranean, alongside the bands No Alternative, VKTMS, and The Tools.  Rest in peace to original member Will Shatter, who died of a heroin overdose 22 years ago.

Flipper "Ha Ha Ha" lyrics

Isn't life a blast?
It's just like living in the past
We go downtown to do our shopping
And we live in Suburbia
And I say
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho
He he he he he he he he
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
What is there to do she said
He said come on baby
And I'll show you a good time
So they went on down
To one of those cheap motels
And they got all gushy and wet
And I say
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho
He he he he he he he he
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
