Amoeba Review

02/18/2013

Maxmillion Dunbar exists in the strange new world of EDM and dubstep as an outlier interested in building moods and special moments beyond the usual beat drops and deep bass hits. Also part of the duo Beautiful Swimmers and as a co-founder of the Future Times label, Maximillion Dunbar aka Andrew Field-Pickering uses bits of old sounds, pairing Tangerine Dream synths and repurposed house beats, to create pieces like the aptly named “Slave to the Beat,” which lulls you with modular synth pad repetition before dropping a beat halfway through — this ain’t new age music your parents could jam to. “Woo” similarly is made of half cosmic goo, half dance-driven beatwork — I can’t really imagine dancing to it, but apparently people in Washington D.C. do! House of Woo can be as intoxicating in full chill out mode too, as on the disco-noir of “Figurine [Nod Mix]” and ambient dream pop of “For Mozy.” It’s tricky to put a finger on Maximillion Dunbar, though his aesthetic doesn’t come across as stitched together. House of Woo seamlessly draws its lines from ambient to new age to house without any fuss, making it as fun to deconstruct as it is to lose yourself in.
