Review The Groundhogs released Who Will Save the World in the spring of 1972, and on this album the band relies on a more progressive rock sound, with more concise riffs and the brilliant use of synthesizers and mellotron at the hands of producer/composer/guitarist Tony McPhee. The album opens with “Earth is Not Enough Room,” a tight jazz rock tune featuring Mcphee’s signature guitar riffs without the meandering style the band had on previous albums. Lyrically the album leans towards McPhee’s previous themes of anti- war, giving a strong and clear message particularly on tracks like “ Wage of Peace,” which is also musically superb. The closing track “The Grey Maze” features more of the sound fans may be accustomed to from their previous albums, with heavy psychedelic riffs throughout this lengthy 10-minute jam. Though different from their previous work, Who Will Save the World finds the band at their most concise and musically challenging, making this album a must for any collection. -Tiffany Anders |
