Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks is an indie rock band featuring former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus on vocals and guitar, Joanna Bolme on bass, Mike Clark on keyboards and ex-Joggers drummer Jake Morris. The Jicks formed in Malkmus' hometown of Portland, Oregon in 2000 after the demise of Pavement in 1999.
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks released their first album, Stephen Malkmus, on Matador Records in 2001. Shortly after they began their U.K and U.S. tours with Elastica's Justine Frischmann joining the band as a guitarist for selected dates. Pig Lib, the Jicks' follow-up, was released in 2003 and the Jicks opened for Radiohead on their North American tour. In 2004, the band also helped to curate an edition of the British All Tomorrow's Parties festival. The Jicks' third album, Face the Truth, was released in 2005 with Malkmus mostly recording the album solo in his basement. The Jicks returned to the studio for their fourth album, Real Emotional Trash, in 2008 and John Moen, who was their drummer at the time, left the band to join The Decemberists. Moen was then replaced with new member Janet Weiss (of Quasi and former Sleater-Kinney drummer). In 2010, Malkmus did a reunion tour with Pavement and Janet Weiss left the band to form Wild Flag. The Jicks completed recording their fifth album Mirror Traffic (Matador) which was released on August 23, 2011 and was produced by Beck.
