Kimbra is like New Zealand’s answer to Björk — an artist who is as difficult to categorize as she is addicting to listen to, one who manipulates her powerful voice to whatever whimsy she chooses. Also similar in spirit to San Francisco’s Tune-Yards or Dirty Projectors’ Angel Deradoorian, Kimbra’s voice leaps elastically through tunes that are jam-packed with ideas yet remain memorable. She imbues “Settle Down” with breathy and guttural asides and jazzy harmonies while laying it all out emotionally — if you like it than you should put a ring on it. On “Something in the Way You Are,” Kimbra creates a lush indie-soul lullaby that suggests Aaliyah singing over chillwave. On “Cameo Lover,” she spins out ’80s R&B verses before dropping everything for a big classic soul chorus that will have you cheering every time those Phil Spector drums hit. It’s a tricky combination, but Kimbra pulls it off by balancing laid-back cool with fierceness, much like she did in her memorable turn on Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.” That confidence delivery goes a long way in selling Kimbra’s genre-blending ways, making Vows a thrilling pop ride.
