Amoeba Review
For a band known for sunny alt-hippie anthems (“Every Day Should Be a Holiday,” “Bohemian Like You”), This Machine is a relatively dark affair. Songs like “Sad Vacation” and “Well They’re Gone” are spare and acidic, and offer resigned sentiments of bummed-outness. Which is what makes This Machine such an intriguing listen, as a band who cheekily made “heroin is so passé” a winning refrain even makes moroseness sound pretty chill. “The Autumn Carnival” breaks up its monotone verses with a dreamy chorus that swirls like cotton candy. “Enjoy Yourself” could be sarcastic, but its glammed up chorus is still a lot of fun. “Rest Your Head” is surely a career highlight, a lush power-ballad that nicely benefits from frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor’s deep baritone. The Dandy Warhols seem to have a good time even while feeling bitter.
