12/31/1969 Review
The Eagles required a hits package after only four records in as many years. They were successful, to be sure; they had scored a number of Top 40 hits and a few Top 10 positions, but nothing that would indicate the mind-boggling sales of Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) when it was released by Asylum in 1976. It simply encapsulated the early- to mid-70s zeitgeist. It is the all-time best-selling record album in the United States, and the third best worldwide, behind Michael Jackson's Thriller and AC/DC's Back in Black. It’s worth noting that while everyone got to write material on the LPs, it's pretty much Glenn Frey and Don Henley on the singles.
