The North Borders (CD)
Bonobo
Amoeba Review
04/01/2013
U.K. producer Bonobo produces smoothed-out electronica that doesn’t skimp on complexity even as it offers a work- or drive-ready mix of amiable tunes. For those familiar with the radio station KCRW, the station’s site called out Bonobo as “tailor-made for KCRW.” This should give you a sense of what to expect with Bonobo as far as accessibility goes, but his music offers intrigue — the clanging beats of “Cirrus” are sort of a looping, beat-driven update on New Age music, and Erykah Badu proves the perfect foil for Bonobo on the lush soul psychedelia of “Heaven for the Sinner.” British singer Szjerdene also lends sultry vocals to “Towers” and “Transits,” and together with singer Grey Reverend, Bonobo creates a sort of hollowed-out dubstep of the James Blake variety (not the godawful, Skrillex-led American kind) on orchestral, slow-motion opener “First Fires.” Thought it’s tough to say Bonobo comes up new sounds on The North Borders, his way of stringing together several strains of electronic-based music into a cohesive whole — not to mention its thorough listenability — is impressive enough to make the album a sure-to-be favorite for easing long hours toiling at the office, driving on the freeway or making dinner. Bonobo makes music that’s not about admiring it from afar — it’s made to live with.
