The Mystery Of You (CD)
Spencer Day
Amoeba Review
03/11/2013
Since releasing his last record, Vagabond, three years ago, young jazz singer Spencer Day had his heart broken, a fact he has emphasized leading up the release of The Mystery of You. It’s important in noting the change of sound Day presents on The Mystery of You, especially because the change, somewhat ironically, has made Day sound brighter and more upbeat than ever before. On the title track, Day plays like a soundtrack crooner, singing dark melodies over a film noir backdrop, with Ennio Morricone-style guitars and a shuffling beat. Similarly, on “Something Wicked,” Day gets down and dirty over an arrangement reminiscent of jazz standard “Fever.” Elsewhere, Day sings smoothly over bossa nova-style acoustic guitars, but his lyrics and melodies are still minor-key. Day would appear to be one of the few artists who has able to not only take inspiration from his pain, but also make it sound both vibrant and heartbreaking at the same time. Indeed, The Mystery of You breathes new life into Day’s sound.
