It may seem strange to say that a five-year-old-album feels like a breath of fresh air, but such is the power of mxmtoon's 2019 debut, the masquerade. The songs all feel intimate and relatable as a conversation with a friend, whether they're blending lo-key electro beats with alt-R&B and indie pop ("unspoken words") or ukulele twee with gently shambolic folk ("high & dry"). These are just perfect little indie pop gems, earnest, confessional, and effortlessly cool and catchy. the masquerade might be your new favorite album — it's one to get lost in, for sure.
