Review On his band’s debut, Grand Archives’ leader Mat Brooke revives some of the demure chamber pop of Northwest regional faves Carissa’s Wierd (sic), the band where he and former Band of Horses co-writer Ben Bridwell first cohabitated. But Brooke also displays his alpha side and a polished versatility rivaling his old band mate’s. Tipping his cap to icons from the Beach Boys and Lee Perry to early-Bee Gees and even The Clash, and making full use of the instrumental palette from banjos to flugelhorns, these 11 songs nevertheless sound cut from the same cloth, mostly thanks to Brooke’s mellifluous alto. It’s a spot-on vehicle for the Indian summer melancholy that pervades much of the record, which includes an undercurrent of Northwest twang on cuts like “Swan Matches” and “A Setting Sun,” and more traditional pop elements on the late-era, Teenage Fanclub-like “Index Moon.” There are a couple of swings-and-misses, like the aimless folk of “George Kaminski” and the excessively twee “Miniature Birds,” but when summoned, as on the glistening reverb of “Sleepdriving,” the stately crescendo of “Luis Riel,” or the ridiculously anthemic “The Crime Window,” Brooke emphatically shows he was no mere sideman in Band of Horses. -John Schacht		Buy $3.99
