Originally formed as an Allman Brothers side project, this mule has long since galloped to the front of the jam-band herd, led by the gritty soulful vocals and blazing guitar workouts of Warren Haynes. The 65-track Georgia Bootleg Box is a fiery, eye-opening look back at the band when they were just starting out, live of course, as they are always best heard. This captures three shows on three nights in 1996, in Macon, Athens and Atlanta, with Haynes preaching his blues-rock revival to the very receptive Georgia masses. Original bassist Allen Woody and drummer Matt Abts provide loose, muscular rhythms, and Derek Trucks shows up for a few tasty guitar duels. Along with the Black Crowes, Gov't Mule really stoked a renewal of interest in classic '60s and '70s blues-rock sounds, and threw down a couple classics of their own.
