The Fear Record (CD)
Fear
Amoeba Review
11/05/2012
Real punk is bad, tough, cantankerous and incendiary, and by those terms, it doesn't get any realer than Fear. Especially if you throw in bar-fight-inducing and hilarious. Lee Ving & co. formed in '77, inspiring legions of kids to follow their ornery lead. Their 1982 masterpiece, The Record, is full of fast, fiery tunes, with Ving barking humorously offensive crud about livin' in the city, saxophones and beef boloney until your dad comes in and smashes the stereo. Of course, rockers from G N' R to Soundgarden to Megadeth love them and have covered their songs live. (Interestingly, Lee Ving, who was a bit older than most teen punks at the time, has a degree in physics, and originally played with everyone from respected blues artists to jazz guys to a stint as a country singer.) This version of The Record is a new re-recording of their 1982 landmark, with new cover art and a revamped track listing. Plenty of artists have gone back and revisited their early work with the benefit of age and maturity -- I am pleased to report that that is not the case here. Ving is just as crazed and foulmouthed as he ever was, it's just a new journey through the same sleazy landscape they so nobly traversed in '82. Revisit the past boldly!
