The Art Of Love & War (CD)
Angie Stone
Amoeba Review
10/17/2007
Ms. Stone has a long history in R&B, from her days in all-female rap group the Sequence to her post-Soul II Soul outfit Vertical Hold, but she’s best loved for her recent albums of very classy, exquisitely sung mid-tempo neo-soul. Now singing for the recently relaunched Stax label, Angie shows that she can stand tall in that label’s classic lineup. Betty Wright and James Ingram make guest appearances, but the show is all hers – from the gently rolling “Baby” to the uplifting history lesson “My People,” this is a lovely, sensual album from a mature singer who knows what she wants and knows how to sing it.
