This Oxford chamber-pop group takes a giant step with its sophomore effort, a more assured, grand, worldly set of tunes that still conveys the effervescent wonder and lovestruck optimism of Beachcomber's Windowsill. Brian Briggs' voice flies high on an expanded lyrical palette, full of big themes of life and experience, and John Ouin frames his tales with stunningly rich, earthy rock arrangements that range from the soaring Dexys-esque "You Take Me As I Am" to the gypsy ragtime of "The Great Procrastinator." They mine the same vein as Mumford & Sons, but with more wisdom and unabashed joy. In fact, they practically remind me of Prefab Sprout, a similarly sensitive and accomplished band that's not ashamed to bust out in rapturous elation. Journey to far Stornoway, and sail home on a cloud ship of dreams.
