I tried many times to like the Dirty Projectors and sort of gave up after a while. Too showy, full of unnecessarily ostentatious playing for my taste, and occasionally grating to boot. But in 2012, Dirty Projectors became a band that was as much fun to like as they were to admire with two releases, the pretty About to Die EP and full-length Swing Lo Magellan, whose middle portion especially — the appealingly low-key hippie folk of the title track, the Mali-style guitarwork of “Dance for You,” the tunefulness of “Impregnable Question” — redeems their need to belt and shred away with abandon.

Dirty Projectors continue to be compelling because of how intricate their craft is, how mangled they allow their songs to get, how crazy the vocals leap and dive through them. Swing Lo Magellan is even more accessible than Bitte Orca, and for every band geek moment, there’s a big badass guitar solo or gorgeous set of angelic harmonies to make the more experimental bits go down easier. Like their forebears in Talking Heads, they know how to incorporate adventurous sounds into three-minute pop nuggets, like the strange, bubbling drums in “About to Die” and the jazzy, choral harmonies in “Gun Has No Trigger.” They also show that when they strip away some of the more esoteric bits, they can still be quite affecting, as on the relatively straightforward, melodic title track. Swing Lo Magellan strikes the perfect balance of headiness and hookiness.
