For Strong Arm Steady's fourth official album, Stereo Type, the SoCal crew keep up their spotless rep for delivering nothing but true to its core hip-hop and never being afraid to push the envelope into new, unexpected areas; a rep that has justifiably won them a dedicated cult following of fans who have snapped up their previous three albums and their dozen plus mixtapes. Said fans would agree that following up on their last outing - the collaboration with Madlib (2010's In Search of Stoney Jackson - also on Stones Throw) would be a hard act to follow but Strong Arm Steady (aka SAS) have ably matched that last tour de force with this newest collaboration with Statik Selektah. Their choice of the Brooklyn producer/DJ was the perfect one as he brings out the best in SAS members Mitchy Slick, Krondon, and Phil Da Agony. The 14-track album also offers a taste of many other West Coast mic wreckers with guest appearances by both well-known and unknown Cali MCs including Planet Asia and Schoolboy Q. The red herring here is the surprise guest spot by down south rap artist David Banner whose appearance on "Through The Motions" (while not the album's strongest point) reinforces SAS's rep for never being afraid to push boundaries and explore far-reaching new corners of their genre. Indeed, Stereo Type is anything but stereotypical.
