Amoeba Review

10/14/2013

Cults had a huge indie hit with "Go Outside," a song that could've felt contrived to sell records, if it hadn't been so damn catchy and well-constructed. For their followup, Cults wisely don't fall into the trap many bands do and try to overdo it. Static has much of the same appeal as their first album, which is to say it sounds like a reverbed, hipster, shoegaze version of Motown and Phil Spector's girl groups. Their clearest bids for another smash come early on the record, particularly with the song "I Can Hardly Make You Mine," an inspiring slice of guitar-pop heaven, with producer Shane Stoneback (who also produced the first record) getting those drum hits to sound just like a Spector record and guitarist Brian Oblivion delivering gorgeous splashes of smeared guitar noise. Singer Madeline Follin goes higher than high, her angelic voice making the Pixies-ripoff-but-who-cares-it's-irresistable "Always Forever" go down smooth as milk. So Static struggles a bit to make as big of an impact as the band did before. You'll still probably headphoning it to this record for the rest of the year and singing along to it at your desk. Don't resist.
