La Sera’s Katy Goodman makes jangly college rock sound fun and cool again on Sees the Light. Her nonchalant delivery makes her breakup lyrics sound triumphant, whether it’s the country-esque moving-on ode that opens the album, “Love That’s Gone,” or the heavenly alterna-rock of “Break My Heart.” Goodman’s various takes on the three-minute, four-chord power-pop nugget work because you can tell she has the knowledge (and record collection) to back her borrowing, such as in the too-cool C86 jam “Please Be My Third Eye.” And when the Vivian Girls member stretches beyond her range, as on the island pop of “Real Boy,” the results are equally pleasing.
