Rhythmeen (CD)
ZZ Top
Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 05/06/2008
Rhythmeen is ZZ Top’s twelfth album, released in September of 1996 by RCA Records. The band—Billy Gibbons on guitar and lead vocals; Dusty Hill on bass and vocals; and Frank Beard on drums—staged an improbably comeback with 1983’s smash hit, Eliminator, thanks to an unlikely use of synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines. However, they eschew all of that with Rhythmeen (and its predecessor, 1994’s Antenna), and attempt a return to the dirty, stripped-down, blues-rock growl of the early 1970s. Some of the pop hooks are missing as well, but hard-core fans who found the synths a distraction will welcome this raw bit of unwholesome sound.
