North American LP debut in stereo. Following the chart success of their first two singles "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me," the Beatles were itching to record their first full length album, and what a debut. Having played marathon live sets together for most of the last two years, the band was as tight as a band can be and they recorded the entire album in a single day. Please Please Me contains eight original songs (unheard of at the time) that show off their pop prowess and hint at their future hit-writing mastery. Sweet harmonies and hooks abound in the self-penned love songs "P.S. I Love You," "Ask Me Why," and "Do You Want to Know A Secret" which blend well with the bluesier covers "Anna (Go to Him)" and "Baby It's You." From Paul's opening count-off on the bass and hand-clap driven rock 'n' roll classic "I Saw Her Standing There" (possibly the greatest album opener ever), to Ringo's pounding thump and vocal on "Boys," to George's beautiful guitar work everywhere, to John's epic, single-take vocal assault on "Twist and Shout" (greatest closer?), Please Please Me sets the tone for the Beatles remarkable seven year recording career. The album spent 30 weeks at number one on the UK charts only to be knocked off by their sophomore release.
