Pastel Blues (CD)
Nina Simone
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 09/07/2010
Nina Simone’s undeniable power as a singer, musician, and performer truly shines on this 1965 release. This would be Simone’s venture into the blues, and while it’s with a jazz slant, she succeeds in capturing the grit and feel of the blues. The opening track, “Be My Husband,” clearly illustrates this with its chain-gang rhythm and fierce vocals. However, from this point on you will find a more sophisticated version of the blues, with skillfully played piano accompanying her potent vocals. “End Of The Line” perfectly sums up the despondent end of a relationship, and Simone’s version of “Strange Fruit” is just as stellar as Billie Holiday’s. Other heart-breakers include “Tell Me More And More And Then Some” and “Sinnerman.”
