Amoeba Review

06/26/2012

L.A.’s Everest are a real rock ’n’ roll band, and one with great taste and a sense of dynamics. Rather than rip your head off with riffery, they being “Rapture” by setting a sturdy backbone of a steady beat and harmonies before pummeling into a psych breakdown in the song’s last minute. “Into the Grey’s” whistling melody is just the grabber for a heady blues rumination. Meanwhile, “Give a Little” introduce elements of Beatles-esque pop to the mix, and the dreamy “Raking Me Over the Coals” is like newly panned AM radio gold. All of this jibes remarkably well, and reminds us that rock bands can try to be more than just one thing and occasionally succeed, as Everest does on Ownerless.
