No One Can Ever Know: The Remixes (CD)
The Twilight Sad
Amoeba Review

The Twilight Sad released, in my opinion, the best album of 2012 with their third album, No One Can Ever Know, last February. The album found my favorite Scottish trio steering away from their early shoegazing sound towards synthesizers and a sound influenced by krautrock and industrial music. The album was darker than anything The Sad had done before, and the music seemed ready and inviting to be remixed. Enter No One Can Ever Know: The Remixes, which is not a track-for-track remix album, but instead nine remixes of four tracks from the original LP ("Sick," "Not Sleeping," "Alphabet," and "Nil"), including twitchy and throbbing remixes from Brokenchord and Com Truise for the single "Sick," and Liars' tense reworking of "Nil." When the tracklisting was announced, I was a little surprised that the album's danciest track "Another Bed" or the pounding, pulsing, industrial closer "Kill It In The Morning" were untouched by a remix, and some of the remixes on this collection offer diminishing returns. But the bleakness and darkness of No One Can Ever Know can only hint at where the band is headed for their fourth album, and N/O/C/E/K: The Remixes provides a nice alternative.
