News From Nowhere (CD)
Darkstar
Amoeba Review
02/04/2013
Darkstar’s sound is one part goth, one part electronic indie pop, emerging with a formula for nighttime music that never gets too dark nor too cloying. “Light Body Clock Starter” is fittingly titled, like the band setting its own alarm clock, yawning into “Timeaway,” while its alternating male and female vocals layered over sparkling synthesizers suggests middle-of-the-night musings. “Armonica” takes the band through batter acid soaked Americana, their digitally altered atonal vocals offering one of the coolest, weirdest hooks on the album. But Darkstar know restraint well, and when they pull back the strange effects, as on the minimal gypsy goth beauty of “Young Heart’s” or the Animal Collective-esque psychedelia of “Amplified Ease,” the result is even more alluring.
