Much like most 80’s music, musicians started to use technology to their advantage. One synth could replace a whole band and as such, a whole movement was created. In Algeria, it was no different. Rai music is classic Algerian party music and the added synths and drum machines does not diminish or lighten the intensity of the music. Despite the fact the music was recorded over 40 years ago, it still sounds fresh and ready for the dance floor. Whether you are a fan of Rai or new to it, here is a great place to start.

I was told to get this album by friends and I almost overlooked it in the glut of retro-Brazilian releases that came out in the last several months. I’m glad I listened. Roge evokes the sound of Brazil’s MPB movement, creating a timeless classic complete with the legendary Arthur Verocai’s lush string arrangements. Play this along your Joyce and Milton Nascimento records and no one will know this album came out in 2023.

Quantum Criminals: Ramblers, Wild Gamblers, and Other Sole Survivors from the Songs of Steely Dan (Book)

There are books that can tell you what Steely Dan did; this is the first book to tell you what Steely Dan means. It talks about the Giant Girlfriend and "The Second Arrangement" and the crucial role Walter Becker played as Donald Fagen's songwriting partner. Joan LeMay's paintings shed a light on what a squonk's tears could look like, and Alex Pappademas leaves no stone unturned as he explores their working methods and unique worldview. It's all conjecture and supposition, given that Becker and Fagen were loathe to explain themselves, but most of the analysis seems spot on to me. If you've ever caught yourself humming a Steely Dan tune and wondered what the hell you were singing about, wonder no more.
