Out on eye-catching orange vinyl, MMJ Live Vol 2: Chicago 2021 is the second release in My Morning Jacket’s MMJ Live series. This is the band at their most powerful, feeding off the energy of the crowd and giving it back in full emotional force, as they move effortlessly from classics like “Mahgeetah” to newer works like “Love Love Love.” All the tracks come from MMJ’s November 5, 2021 show at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre, with pristine studio-quality sound. The band possesses the rare ability to create tracks that sound, at once, both intimate and sweeping, and the Chicago show is an excellent example. It feels like Jim James is singing straight to your heart, even as the transcendent quality of the band’s crescendoing sound seems to reverberate throughout the room. Gorgeous, moving, and intense.
