MDNA (CD) [Explicit]
Madonna
Amoeba Review
03/26/2012
Madonna is again riding high in all her dance-floor glory on MDNA, among the best records in the second half of her career, along with 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor and 1998’s Ray of Light. From the get-go, on the Benny Benassi-produced, upbeat “Girls Gone Wild,” she’s aiming to show a new batch of pop stars she helped inspire — specifically, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha and Skrillex, all of whom MDNA’s hard dance sound most resemble — that she can hang. Her best songs transcend that pack with what Madonna still does quite well — being provocative while still having something to say. “Girls Gone Wild’s” seemingly sincere plea to God that she “want[s] so badly to be good” precedes giving in to her inhibitions with “Girl’s” troubled hedonism. On “Gang Bang,” perhaps the album’s best track, she kisses off an old lover with awesome irreverence to Nancy Sinatra, religion and everything else — it’s like a country classic cloaked in heavy beats. “Give Me All Your Luvin’” wears its cheerleader-tackiness proudly, like a rave update of Tony Basil’s “Mickey,” and gets a welcome coolness upgrade from its guest spots from Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. They’re not all winners — “Superstar’s” girly adoration sounds too ridiculously naïve coming from Madonna — but the joy of MDNA is that Madonna sounds fired up and relevant again.
