Long Player (CD)
Faces
Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 05/27/2010
The Faces 1970 debut, First Step hinted at glory, and a brief glance at the band’s roster is tantalizing: Rod Stewart on vocals, Ron Wood on guitar, Ronnie Lane on bass guitar, Ian McLagan on keys, and Kenney Jones on drums. Stewart is Stewart, Wood ended up in the Rolling Stones, and Jones joined the Who, but in the meantime there are the Faces, and Long Player was an appreciable commercial success compared to its predecessor. This is genuinely joyous rock ‘n’ roll, and Stewart’s soaring vocals made him superior to Mick Jagger as a frontman. The version of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” soars, and even though the tracks seem a bit ramshackle, there is shambolic beauty and bliss on this 1971 classic.
