August 28th, 2010 - San Francisco

A veteran of many musical campaigns (Tom Waits, B-52’s, Black Francis, Jonathan Richman, Stan Ridgway), Ralph Carney is at it again and this time he's doubling as bandleader and horn-blower to his own line-up, Ralph Carney’s Serious Jass Project.

For the band’s first release, Carney picked some of his favorite music from Duke Ellington’s small band recordings from the late 1930s, a couple of honkers and screamers by Big Jay McNeely and Lee Allen, and a rather cool rendering of Bix and Tram’s “Futuristic Rhythm.”

Carney has fortified himself with a crack San Francisco rhythm section comprised of Ari Munkres on upright bass, Michael McIntosh on the keys, and Randy Odell on drums and bongo. They are a pulsing, driving rhythm section sensitive to their leader's fantastical musical wanderings.
