Amoeba Review

06/09/2014

Jack White keeps you guessing on his second solo album. After opening the album with blues rocker “Three Women,” a reverential old-style blues number that represents one end of the White canon (before blowing up into punk chords at the end), Lazaretto goes off in a number of directions. The title track kicks up some dust with experimentation reminiscent of the underrated White Stripes album Get Behind Me Satan, with White nearly rapping over Danger Mouse’s dazzling production. Though Lazaretto mostly stays within the realms of Americana, these songs are as idiosyncratic as ever. White duels his fuzzed-out guitar against fiddle and piano on “High Ball Stepper,” bringing the goods and proving you can’t fake your way through the blues. He’s as comfortable writing a bluegrass ballad like “Entitlement,” which seems unearthed from an old folk compilation, as he is channeling the Rolling Stones on “Just One Drink.” And who else might write a campy, Columbo-referencing song called “That Black Bat Licorice” that sounds pulled from some unwritten blues-punk musical? Though White follows his muse into wild territory on Lazaretto, it rarely leads him astray. Unpredictable as he may be, you’re inclined to follow White wherever he leads.
