Koi No Yokan (LP) [Explicit]
Deftones
Amoeba Review
Though it’s been a long time since Deftones lead the class of alt-metal acts in the late’90s, Deftones’ seventh studio album continues the fertile late period of the Deftones output after their excellent 2010 album, Diamond Eyes. Koi No Yokan is a markedly mature album that stays true to the band’s roots, encasing their doom-laden hardcore within atmospherics that highlight the band’s melodic and songwriting chops. Deftones have always been in a class of their own, being one of the only bands of their nature that comes to mind that you could qualify as “thoughtful,” yet that’s what they accomplish here, as “Swerve City’s” rolling riffs and melodic choruses are catchy enough for rock radio, but it’s full of twists and turns that keep you coming back. “Romantic Dreams” is delectable math-metal, while “Leathers” is pure horror soundtrack joy, starting with a few bars of dread-bearing strings until Chino Moreno belts with the tenacity of Leatherface over slow-rolling metal. The horror motif continues on the nasty “Poltergeist,” a particularly snarly track that shows how strong Deftones with little in the way of restraint as well. Koi No Yokan has its variety, as well, with songs like “Entombed,” as lovely a ballad as Deftones have ever allowed themselves to put to tape. It shows that even as the band gets older, they haven’t mellowed much — and when they do, the sound is equally affecting.
