Instrmntl (CD)
Dabrye
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/13/2010
Tadd Mullinix, best known as Dabrye, produces soulful machine funk that fuses many of underground beat music’s most innovative tendencies for a truly fresh sound. While certainly dominated by instrumental hip-hop, Dabrye also uses elements of Detroit techno, minimal funk and the textures of ambient and dub on his second record, 2002’s Instrmntl. Released on Prefuse 73’s Eastern Developments imprint, this record helped cement Dabrye as one of the premier producers of adventurous downtempo beat music. The deep soul feel of these tracks is perfectly offset by dirty, machine-driven rhythms and buzzing synth lines that make it an instant classic. Essential for all fans of experimental hip-hop.
