If You Could Read My Mind
Gordon Lightfoot
Amoeba Review

If You Could Read My Mind is one of Gordon Lightfoot’s top-selling albums. The album was originally titled Sit Down Young Strangers but was changed after the song “If You Could Read My Mind” rapidly climbed the charts, reaching number 5; the album itself reached number 12. Lightfoot’s distinct country/folk style is demonstrated with incredible ease and grace on this album. He is backed by some stellar talent: Van Dyke Parks on harmonium, Ry Cooder on bottleneck guitar and mandolin, John Sebastian on autoharp, and Randy Newman on string arrangements. This batch of compositions is quintessential singer/songwriter material. Reflective, wise, and sometimes woeful, Lightfoot serves up some of his best. Standout tracks include “Approaching Lavender,” “Your Love’s Return (Song For Stephen Foster),” and “Saturday Clothes.”
