Amoeba Review

11/22/2012

Al Spx offers strange comfort with her debut album I Predict a Graceful Expulsion, singing “take my body home" on stark opener “The Mark” as if treating a lover like an undertaker. Despite building her songs with little more than acoustic guitar, piano and occasional, light strings and drums, her soul-inspired folk shows remarkable depth, with streaks of bluegrass and a gothic veneer. “Winter Soltice” builds into the kind of rousing chorus that would please fans of Mumford & Sons as it would those looking for gospel transcendence. When she cries “I am a goddamn believer” with equal parts irreverence and emotion in “Blank Maps,” you might be inclined to worship at the church of Cold Specks.
