I Love Jazz! (CD)
Louis Armstrong
Amoeba Review
Stuart Kremsky 04/07/2010
Originally released on LP in the early Sixties, I Love Jazz! roams through Fifties recordings by Louis Armstrong and his All Stars to select some old time New Orleans numbers and standards plus a couple of songs that befit Armstrong’s status as a global star. The earliest piece is a lengthy“Twelfth Street Rag” from 1950, with Jack Teagarden, Barney Bigard, and Earl Hines along for the ride. Later editions of the group are on hand for the venerable “Frog-I-More Rag” and “Basin Street Blues,” as well as an extended version of the Russian song “Otchi-Tchor-Ni-Ya” that features pianist Billy Kyle. An orchestra led by Sy Oliver accompanies Armstrong on “Skokiaan,” from South Africa, plus two takes of the title track. While this testament to Armstrong’s lifelong motto probably didn’t need a choir to make its point, the feeling comes through loud and clear.
