With his fourth LP, Get Happy!!, Elvis Costello moved beyond the sound he'd established on his brilliant opening trio of albums. Not content to keep cranking out more records of post-pub rock guitar pop, Costello incorporated his love of Merseybeat and '60s R&B into the twenty songs that comprise Get Happy!!. One of the album's three singles is a cover of Sam & Dave's "I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down," which Costello took to #4 on the UK charts. Many of his originals echo this sound, including the sweet soul of "Opportunity," while second single "High Fidelity" (UK #30) features the insistent stomp and sonic density of Phil Spector's girl group sound. Other cuts like "5ive Gears in Reverse" and "Beaten to the Punch" recall the quick-paced, blues-inspired rock of The Beatles in their pre-fame days. These tunes hew closer to Costello's approach on his first three albums, providing a continuity of sound, while the R&B-inspired songs push into new sonic territory. Reaching #2 in the England and #11 in the US, Get Happy!! is another classic early album from Elvis Costello and the Attractions.
