Dry Land Is Not A Myth (CD)
White Arrows
Amoeba Review
Billy Gil, Hollywood 12/19/2012
White Arrows’ Mickey Church was born legally blind and regained his vision at age 11. Dry Land is Not a Myth’s sparkling psych-pop sounds like the sudden realization of sight and color. Read more about White Arrows in my interview with them earlier this year.

Taking its title from The Cable Guy referencing Waterworld, Dry Land is Not a Myth is a sweet concoction of garage rock bombast and spritzy electronic atmospherics. “Come inside and have a drink” singer Mickey Church invites on “Get Gone,” which seems to have been written with summer barbecues in mind, all island-flavored guitarwork, throbby synths and handclaps. “Coming or Going” gets a party rockin’ makeover from an earlier iteration, its Ghostbusters synths matching the singer’s casual paranoia about his would-be lover. “I Can Go” benefits from easygoing, catchy riffwork and synth flutes, while the high-end vocals and whimsy of songs like “Getting Lost” show off the band’s real chops, reminiscent of weirder bands like Wild Beasts. But June-August singles are White Arrows’ forte on Dry Land is Not a Myth, closing the album with standout “Fireworks of the Sea,” which features Church’s Paul Simon-esque vocals sweetly floating above cloudy synths, irresistibly singing about how jellyfish look kind of like fireworks. White Arrows convince you — they totally do.
