Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and the Wachowskis (Matrix trilogy) have finally brought David Mitchell's sprawling, century-spanning bestseller Cloud Atlas to the screen. It's one of the most fascinating and thrilling films of the year, with actors and themes that recur and intertwine in six stories ranging from the historic past to the sci-fi future. The message of interconnectedness is crystallized by the theme music, which also reverberates throughout time in such guises as a classical motif, a jazz tune and a '70s classic rock riff. Impressed by the role of the score as plot nexus, director Tykwer himself collaborated on the timeless theme with fellow German collaborators Reinhold Heil and Jimmy Klimek (who, in addition to originally playing synths for Nina Hagen, have worked on Deadwood and Without a Trace).
