Florence + the Machine’s unlikely hit “Dog Days Are Over” and its accompanying video and album, Lungs, made up one of the welcome pop breakthroughs of the end of the previous decade, especially among a sea of detritus — see Jessie J et al. But even performing live on the Grammys, flame-haired Florence Welch stuck out like a red sore thumb. Her new album with producer Paul Epworth (of Adele fame) keeps its freak flag handy, despite production that makes everything sound just huge. First single “What the Water Gave Me” is a moving and musically rich anthem, building from subtle electronics and Chinese-inspired instrumentation to a huge chorus in a song that delivers the pop goods while eschewing predictability. Songs like “Water” should please her more indie-minded fans, while the very next song on Ceremonials, “Never Let Me Go,” with its chant-along chorus and soaring choral backups, has the pop ballad prowess to stand alongside Adele’s “Someone Like You” as omnipresent mixtape song of the year. Throughout Ceremonials, Florence's musical adventurousness and spiritual, nearly Celtic singing shine throughout, maintaining her ability to offer subtly challenging music in a multifaceted, colorful sheath.
